What is important in a well designed web page, and when to use Javascript...

TIP 1 - 3 design a web page tips

Fast loading

If any of your web pages do not show within 15 seconds using the average modem speed of 28.8bps, then visitors to your site will grow impatient and click away (I know I've done this countless times).

Your web pages, including graphics, should never exceed more than 30kb in total size. Check how big your web pages are and how fast they display online using this free tool at:

Colors

You must make it easy to read the text on your web pages. Again, don't expect visitors to strain their eyes attempting to read yellow text on a grey background.

Black text on a white background is by far the easiest to read.

Also, its probably a good idea to keep your links the usual underlined, blue color. Why? That's what the majority of Internet users are familiar with. Using a different color link that is not underlined may actually end up confusing your visitors - how are they supposed to know its a link?

Consistency

Make sure the look, feel and design of your site is consistent across all web pages. That means using the same text color, background color, position of navigation links, etc.

This will help visitors jump to different parts of your site with ease, because every page has the same familiar layout.

TIP 2 - JavaScript

JavaScript can help your web pages become more dynamic, interactive to visitors (i.e. produce pop-up windows, show date/time information, show message boxes, plus much more).

One of the best resources on the Internet for JavaScript's is located at:

Go through any one of the excellent tutorials found at that site to learn how to put JavaScript into your web pages. It really is not hard once you start playing around with the examples provided.

Note: Your web pages will take longer to download and display to visitors if you use too many JavaScripts. Use only what you truly need.
